Preparing Your Canva Designs for Commercial Printing

A Complete Step-by-Step Guide

Updated June 25, 2026

Canva is an Excellent Design Tool...But It Wasn't Built by Commercial Printers

Canva has completely changed the way people create marketing materials. Today, millions of real estate agents, brokerages, businesses, nonprofits, and organizations use Canva to design everything from social media graphics to brochures, postcards, flyers, newsletters, and presentations.

We welcome Canva files every day.

In fact, many of our own customers use Canva successfully for their print projects.

The challenge is not Canva itself—it's understanding the commercial printing standards that are required after the design is finished.

Most Canva users are not trained in commercial print production. They may create an attractive design, but overlook important specifications such as:

  • Bleed
  • Safe margins
  • Image resolution
  • Proper page size
  • PDF export settings
  • Crop marks
  • Color preparation

Any one of these items can affect the final printed piece.

At WayBetterPostcard, we have embraced Canva rather than avoiding it. We provide numerous resources to help customers prepare their files correctly, and our production team works with Canva files every day.

We Can Even Edit Your Canva Files

If you would rather have our graphics department review or adjust your Canva design before printing, we can usually do so.

The easiest method is simply sharing your Canva project with our commercial Canva account and granting Editor permissions.

This allows our designers to:

  • Correct bleed issues
  • Adjust margins
  • Improve image placement
  • Replace low-resolution graphics
  • Prepare the file for commercial printing
  • Correct minor layout problems

Because we are working directly within your original Canva design, these changes are usually quick and economical.

If only a PDF or image file is provided without edit access, our designers must recreate or reconstruct portions of the artwork. This process is significantly more time-consuming and may require additional design charges.

Why Print Preparation Matters

A design that looks perfect on a computer screen doesn't always print perfectly.

Commercial printing requires much higher production standards than digital viewing.

Proper file preparation helps prevent:

  • White edges after trimming
  • Blurry photographs
  • Pixelated logos
  • Cropped text
  • Color shifts
  • Reprints
  • Production delays

Spending a few extra minutes preparing your Canva file can save considerable time and expense later.

Step 1 — Create Your Canva File at the Correct Size

Always begin with the finished size required for your printed product.

Every product on WayBetterPostcard.com includes a Design Guidelines tab that lists the proper document dimensions, including bleed.

Rather than designing at the finished size alone, create your Canva document using these full dimensions.

For example:

Instead of creating an 8.5" × 5.5" postcard, you would create the document at:

8.75" × 5.75"

This additional 0.125" on each side provides the necessary bleed area required for commercial trimming.

We recommend selecting:

Resize → Custom Size

and entering the exact dimensions listed in our Design Guidelines.

Step 2 — Understand Bleed

Bleed is one of the most misunderstood concepts in commercial printing.

Bleed simply means extending your background colors, images, or graphics beyond the finished trim line.

Without bleed, even slight variations during trimming can leave thin white edges around your printed piece.

If your design has a colored background, photograph, or pattern extending to the edge of the page, that element must continue into the bleed area.

Understanding bleed is one of the biggest steps toward producing professional-looking printed materials.

Step 3 — Keep Important Content Inside the Safe Area

Text, logos, QR codes, phone numbers, and other important information should never be placed too close to the edge.

Keep these items safely inside the trim area to prevent accidental cropping during production.

A good rule is to leave at least 0.25 inches of space from the final trim edge whenever possible.

Step 4 — Use High-Resolution Images

Commercial printing requires high-resolution graphics.

Images downloaded from websites or social media are often too small for quality printing.

Whenever possible:

  • Use original photographs
  • Use Canva Pro images
  • Upload high-resolution logos
  • Avoid enlarging small images

Low-resolution graphics may appear acceptable on screen but often become blurry or pixelated in print.

Step 5 — Review Your Design Carefully

Before exporting:

  • Check spelling
  • Verify phone numbers
  • Confirm website addresses
  • Review QR codes
  • Inspect image quality
  • Ensure nothing extends outside the safe area

It is much easier to correct mistakes before printing than afterward.

Step 6 — Export Using PDF Print

This is the most important step.

Select:

Share → Download

Then choose:

PDF Print

Never export commercial print files as JPG whenever possible.

PDF Print preserves:

  • Image quality
  • Vector graphics
  • Fonts
  • Page size
  • Professional print settings

Step 7 — Enable Crop Marks and Bleed

When exporting your PDF, enable:

✔ Crop Marks

✔ Bleed

These options tell the commercial printer exactly where the finished piece should be trimmed.

Step 8 — Choose CMYK (When Available)

Commercial presses print using CMYK inks.

Canva designs are created in RGB, but PDF Print provides the closest commercial output available within Canva.

Some very bright RGB colors—especially neon greens, blues, and oranges—cannot be reproduced exactly in CMYK.

This is normal for every commercial printing process.

Step 9 — Review Your Final PDF

Always open the exported PDF before sending it to print.

Check:

  • Every page
  • Bleed
  • Crop marks
  • Image quality
  • Text placement
  • Missing graphics

Taking one final look often catches mistakes that were overlooked during design.

Common Canva Printing Mistakes

The issues we see most frequently include:

  • No bleed
  • Incorrect document size
  • Low-resolution photographs
  • Text placed too close to the edge
  • JPG files submitted instead of PDF Print
  • Missing crop marks
  • Incorrect page orientation
  • Images accidentally stretched
  • Logos copied from websites

Fortunately, nearly all of these issues are preventable with proper setup.
